Gas

Best Practices

  1. Know your gas shut-off valve. Familiarize yourself with the location of your in-suite gas shut-off valve so you can act quickly in the event of an emergency.
  2. Use gas appliances as intended. Operate all gas appliances strictly according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not use ovens, cooktops, or BBQ connections for heating or any purpose other than intended.
  3. Ensure proper ventilation. Always use exhaust fans when cooking, and ensure vents are not blocked. Adequate ventilation helps prevent the buildup of gas and combustion byproducts.
  4. Never modify gas connections. Gas lines, valves, and appliances must not be altered or repaired by residents. All gas-related work must be performed by a licensed gas fitter and approved by building management where required.
  5. Watch for warning signs. If you smell gas (often described as a “rotten egg” odor), hear hissing, or suspect a leak:
    1. Do not use electrical switches or open flames
    2. Open windows if safe to do so
    3. Leave the area immediately
    4. Contact your gas utility provider or emergency services from a safe location
  6. Keep appliances and connections clear. Do not store items near gas appliances or block access to gas shut-off valves, vents, or flexible connectors.
  7. Do not tamper with safety devices. Never disable carbon monoxide detectors, gas detectors, or appliance safety features installed in your home or common areas.
  8. Schedule professional servicing. Gas appliances should be inspected and serviced by a qualified professional as recommended by the manufacturer.
  9. Follow move-in and renovation rules. Any appliance replacement, renovation, or installation involving gas must receive prior approval from building management and comply with applicable codes and permits.
